Introduced from Japan by Veitch and Sons of Chelsea UK in 1882.
A species native to sunny grassy slopes in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan where it is common and variable.
Award of Merit and First Class Certificate RHS.

An attractive plant for the garden but needs plenty of water to make it grow well.
Parent of several thunbergii hybrids and all have same habit.
