A species introduced from China in 1892. Also reported to be in Kyushu(Tsushima), Korea, Manchuria, Northern China, Amur and Ussuri.
Variable in colour in the wild.
Parent of many garden hybrids.

Quite a useful garden plant but not outstanding.
Has a creeping rootstock so needs careful placing as it can overwhelm other cultivars. Best planted in an area where it can spread on its own.
