A Wonderland of Colour – March/ April 2024

By March 25, 2024No Comments

A wonderland of colourful Magnolia blooms surrounds the gardens at present. From the huge cups of the New Zealand bred cultivars of ‘Apollo’ (purplish pink), ‘Athene’ (milky white),’ Iolanthe’ (reddish pink) and ‘Black Tulip’ (deep reddish purple) to the small delicate white form of stellata and ‘Merril’ and the salmon pink of ‘Leonard Messel’. This has got to be the best display of all time.

We have nearly 100 different forms of Magnolia plants giving a succession of colour. It started early this year in February and will continue well into April. Our Camellias are spectacular too, covering the branches with their colourful blooms. In the walled garden is our Camellia greenhouse ablaze with colourful blooms. This was planted in the 1960s and still contains the same plants and is a wonderful experience and somewhere to dive into if the weather turns nasty.

Magnolia Blooms – March 24

The gardens are bursting into life with daffodils and even bluebells carpeting the ground.  This is the earliest we have ever had bluebells in flower due no doubt with the mild winter we have had, particularly February and early March which has been very mild. The bluebells are quite extensive under the trees and will look spectacular in April.

The Scree Garden covered in alpine plants is now bursting into flower and soon the beautiful dwarf tulips will give a spectacular display.

Work is continuing on many projects and several of the areas will soon be planted hopefully giving a glorious display in summer. Our new path on the far hillside is taking rapidly taking shape and will be an added addition to explore the beautiful and interesting plants which grow in that area.

Do enjoy your visit around the gardens and call in at the Plant Centre as there is a whole host of interesting plants and tearoom has a new menu this spring with a lot of home cooked meals and cakes available.
