08 October 2009: October Interesting Plants
diary/diarypics/_IGP5109 (Medium)-1255021416.jpg
Fascicularia bicolor
This is a rosetted, terrestrial bromeliad with slender spiny-toothed rigid leaves. The innermost leaves of mature rosettes become bright crimson at flowering. In summer, mature rosettes produce an inflorescence with dense corymbs of pale blue flowers surrounded by ivory-white bracts. It originates from Chile, and is half-hardy if protected from excessive winter wet.
One example is by the pond outside the Plant Sales area, and another is in the Architectural Plants border.

The trunks of the Snow Gums at this time of year appear ghostly in the winter sunshine. Coming from the snowy mountains of New South Wales in Australia they are the hardiest of all the Eucalyptus and with their bark peeling to reveal the patchwork trunk they are a great sight at the gardens at all times of year
